Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGenre: Drama, Musical, Romance
Run Time: 2 hours, 37 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter Directed by Tom Hooper (The Damned United, The King's Speech) If you are predisposed not to like musicals going into one, chances are you won't like it. Just like foreign films, movies with sub-titles or the work of an actor or director that you loathe, you should enter into each film with an open heart and an open mind, hoping to surprised even if perhaps your gut is trying to save yourself from a letdown. But if you can do that, then you probably will love the newest film version of the classic tale, Les Miserables. Rating: 1 out of 5 starsRating: 1 out of 5 stars

Directed by Dan Cutforth & Jane Lipsitz (feature-film debut, directed TV documentary Hunger Hits Home) Opens locally Thursday, July 5th, 2012 There is a wall around Katy Perry. In this rock-umentary, we follow the pop icon on and off the stage during her massive 2011 world tour, her first major one. At the beginning of each show during the 124 show tour, Katy is surrounded by walls as she rises up from the stage and into the sights of her screaming fans, revealing herself and her music. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Drama, Musical
Run Time: 2 hours 3 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Juliann Hough, Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Malin Akerman Directed by Adam Shankman (Bedtime Stories, Hairspray (2007), The Wedding Planner) A wise man once said that every rose has its thorn, and Rock of Ages definitely has its fair share is sticking points. This big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical delivers as an homage to all things rock and roll circa the 1980s, suited perfectly for anybody who remembers the era of big hair and bigger rock personalities. Rating: 5 out of 5 starsAndrew Lloyd Webber has created a new masterpiece to follow up his classic, timeless 1986 musical, The Phantom of the Opera. Only trouble is, this sequel, Love Never Dies, is only in theaters for one more night, Wednesday, March 7th.

They host a a wide array of in-theater events, bringing famous stage plays to the movie screen, operas, concerts, and events of all kinds. Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Family, Musical
Opens locally Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour 38 minutes, Rated PG Starring: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones Directed by James Bobin (feature film directorial debut) The Muppets are back, and all's I can wonder is why they ever left! I would imagine that it would be impossible to have grown up in the 70s and 80s and not have known about The Muppets. Created by the late Jim Henson, The Muppets are a part of American pop culture, although their last theatric release, "Muppets in Space," was released over 12 years ago (they have been around with a few TV specials since then.) So what became of Kermit, Piggy, and the gang? Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Re-make, Comedy, Drama, Music
Opens locally Friday, October 14th, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour, 53 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell, Miles Teller Directed by Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan, Hustle & Flow) I’m assuming that everybody is familiar with the 1984 classic “Footloose” starring the young Kevin Bacon. If you haven’t seen the film, or can’t remember it, chances are you are at least aware of it. At the very least, you are probably familiar with the hit song of the same name, by Kenny Loggins. Now, I’m not a big fan of re-making classic films…why can’t younger audiences re-discover classic films on their own, like we had to with black & white films? That aside, considering all the movies that could be re-made, why choose “Footloose”? Genre: Animated Classic, Musical
Opens Friday September 16th, 2011, for 2 weeks only (check for showtimes) Run Time: 1 hour 27 minutes Voice cast: Jonathan Taylor-Thomas, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons Directed by Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff Hard to believe that it's been 17 years since the original "The Lion King" was released. It's a classic movie that stands the test of time, as most all animated Disney classics do. OK, I'm a bit biased, having practically been raised up at Disney World (at the age of 32, my family has vacationed there at least 25 times.) |
