Rating: 3 out of 5 starsRun Time: 1 hour, 51 minutes, Rated PG-13
Starring: Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith, Tobey Maguire, Maika Monroe, Clark Gregg, James Van Der Beek Based on the novel by Joyce Maynard Written & Directed by Jason Reitman (Young Adult, Up in the Air, Juno, Thank You for Smoking) Labor Day (opening today) is not the massive celebrity-ensemble sequel to Valentine's Dayor New Year's Eve, nor is it directed by Garry Marshall. Instead, it is a departure of sorts for writer/director Jason Reitman, the man who brought us Thank You for Smoking and Up in the Air, and who directed two Diablo Cody screenplays (Juno and Young Adult). With Labor Day, Reitman abandons sharply insightful comedies for a try at schmaltzy romantic drama.

Rating: 1 out of 5 starsRun Time: 1 hour, 34 minutes, Rated R
Starring: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis, Jessica Lucas, Addison Timlin Written & Directed by Tom Gormican (feature-film debut for both) The Hollywood garbage dump that is January has its latest, steaming turd. It's That Awkward Moment (opening today), a tedious, hollow, unfunny and - at times - even offensive R-rated comedy from Tom Gormican. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Drama, Foreign
Run Time: 2 hours, 22 minutes, Not Rated Starring: Tony Servillo, Sabrina Ferilli, Giorgio Pasotti, Carlo Verdone Co-Written and Directed by Paolo Sorrentino (This Must Be the Place, The Family Friend, One Man Up) As stated in the Italian film, La grande bellezza(translated in English to "The Great Beauty", and opening today at the Detroit Film Theater), everything ends with death. Ah, but before death, there is life. In this film, director Paolo Sorrentino's stunning, near-visual masterpiece is full of life, a deep inhale of the beauties that surround us and the wonderful colors of our past. Run Time: 2 hours, Rated R Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pratt, Amy Adams, Matt Letscher Written & Directed by Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) Spike Jonze's vision of the future in Her (opening today), is one of the most creative and insightful that we've seen in in long time. It does grow tiring to see one cataclysmic apocalypse after another, when looking ahead into humanity's journey through time. Her takes place in the not-so-distant future and features the next evolution in "smart" technology...a world where you won't just love the latest technological release, you may fall in love with it. Literally. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Action, Thriller, Drama
Run Time: 2 hours, 1 minutes, Rated R Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Alexander Ludwig, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch, Eric Bana, Jerry Ferrara, Scott Elrod, Ali Suliman Written & Directed by Peter Berg (Battleship, The Kingdom, Friday Night Sure, the new Mark Wahlberg war film, Lone Survivor (opening today), is accurately named. But its title doesn't necessarily produce tension-riddled drama since we are given the outcome upfront. Based on the book of the same name (the 2007 best-seller by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson), it details a real-life failed mission during the War in Afghanistan, a Navy SEALs mission called "Operation Red Wings," in which four soldiers were sent out into enemy territory to kill or capture a significant Taliban leader. Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGenre: Drama
Run Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes, Rated R Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Dermot Mulroney, Julianne Nicholson, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper Written by Tracy Letts (Killer Joe, Bug) Directed by John Wells (The Company Men) Some films have great casts and carry with them a great expectation for success. But few films assemble such superstars and actually utilize them fully. August: Osage County (opening today), is an oddly-named film that accomplishes the latter: It contains what is, without a doubt, the best ensemble performance of the year by a cast that is elevated by a sharp script and nimble direction. |
