Rating: 3 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Science Fiction
Run Time: 1 hour 38 minutes, Rated R Starring: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, Written by Jared Stern, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod, Saturday Night Live) Opens locally on Friday, July 27th, 2012 The Watch is a prime example of a movie trying to be too many things at once. No question it is mostly a comedy, but it is also firmly a science-fiction film. The first half of the film contains a murder-mystery, while in the second half we get a strand of unneeded family drama shoved in. With comedic stars like Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade in the mix, why not lean towards your strengths? Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Action, Adventure, Comic Book
Run Time: 2 hours 44 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway Directed by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Prestige, Memento) There are only a few certainties in life, and Christopher Nolan delivering us greatness is quickly becoming one of them. Ever since 1998’s Memento, Nolan has quickly become one of the most exciting visionary directors in Hollywood, and now the hype-machine that is Nolan’s final take on The Caped Crusader culminates in The Dark Knight Rises. It is the third and final chapter of his Batman trilogy, one of the most iconic characters of all time. So how does it live up? Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGenre: Drama, Fantasy
Run Time: 1 hours 33 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Gina Montana Directed by Benh Zeitlin (feature film debut) Opens locally on Friday, July 20th, 2012 It is perhaps appropriate that Beasts of the Southern Wild is opening on a day that also sees The Dark Night Rises hitting theaters. It is a small film that may end up being lost in the shuffle, forgotten by the masses, and quickly swept to the side. It would be an ironic outcome for a film that is about people who are treated as such. Rating: 3 out of 5 starsTo Rome With Love is your basic Woody Allen film, with the setting swapped out. This is the famed New Yorker's 41st feature film since 1969, an outstanding feat. While many of his films showed his love for all things New York, in recent years Woody has spread some of that love around the world from the UK (Match Point), to Spain (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), to France (last year's critically-acclaimed Midnight in Paris). It is now Rome's turn in the Woody Allen spotlight, acting as a backdrop to his usual dialogue-driven adventures.

Run Time: 2 hours 10 minutes, Rated R Starring: Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Demian Bichir, Emile Hirsch Directed by Oliver Stone (Wall Street, Born on the 4th of July, JFK, Natural Born Killers) Opens locally on Friday, July 6th, 2012 The lasting importance of Oliver Stone's latest film Savages is the performance of Benicio Del Toro. He plays Lado, a brutal hit-man for a Mexican drug cartel, and in doing so has created one of the fiercest, most iconic villains since Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh in the Coen's No Country For Old Men. It's a performance that stays with you and should be deserving of serious contention come award season. By far my favorite performance so far this year. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Documentary, Music
Directed by Dan Cutforth & Jane Lipsitz (feature-film debut, directed TV documentary Hunger Hits Home) Opens locally Thursday, July 5th, 2012 There is a wall around Katy Perry. In this rock-umentary, we follow the pop icon on and off the stage during her massive 2011 world tour, her first major one. At the beginning of each show during the 124 show tour, Katy is surrounded by walls as she rises up from the stage and into the sights of her screaming fans, revealing herself and her music. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Drama
Run Time: 1 hour 30 minutes, Rated R Starring: Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt Written and Directed by Lynn Shelton (My Effortless Brilliance, Humpday) Opens Friday, June 29th, 2012 Your Sister's Sister seems like it was made for the stage, since a majority of scenes have no camera movement, and feature actors just acting. This is a tremendous compliment by the way, because the three actors on display are marvelous. With the next few months being filled with super-hero overkill, Your Sister's Sister is a nice and thoughtful diversion to the noise of Summer. Rating: 4 out of 5 starsGenre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Run Time: 2 hours 16 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Dennis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan Directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) Opens locally Friday, June 29th, 2012 Perhaps the biggest hurdle facing this newest take on the popular Marvel comic book hero is simply, why? It is not very common that films are completely re-imagined – as this one is – just 10 years removed from its first incarnation, with the most recent chapter coming just five years ago. Rating: 3 out of starsGenre: Drama
Run Time: 1 hour 55 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Hall D'Addario, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Philip Baker Hall, Jon Favreau, Dean Chekvala Directed by Alex Kurtzman (feature film debut) Opens locally Friday, June 29th, 2012 There is a lot to like in People Like Us, but then again there is a lot not to like. Elizabeth Banks gives a great performance playing (I would guess) a very relatable, struggling single mom, even though she is also trapped within a tired "working girl" cliche. Chris Pine is serviceable in the central role, but People Like Us suffers from taking itself way too seriously, not to mention an implausible script. |
