With that, unwrap these 10 best Christmas movies of the 1980s: "The Croods: A New Age," I guess, is harmless fun...that is, unless you decide to go see this in theaters with your family during a global pandemic. It's the follow-up to the 2013 film that no one really asked for, but one that had been kicked around in Hollywood for nearly 7 years before landing at our feet just in time for Thanksgiving (rumor has it, "The Croods: A New Age" will debut on streaming platforms in mid-December but as of now this has not been confirmed).
One of the greatest things about film is the ability to learn and grow through the experiences of others not like yourself...stories told by people or points of view that you might not have otherwise experienced. In the mainstream, for example, we have rarely seen REAL stories about LGBTQ love and family life, let alone in a Christmas movie. Several minorities and groups - like the LGBTQ community - haven't had fair representation on film, to put things mildly.
With "Happiest Season," we get a bona fide lesbian Christmas comedy, one that is really funny, super-relatable to all and also full of heart. Maybe one future Christmas years from now, "Happiest Season" will be known as one of the better Christmas movies period, and not just that it's an LGBTQ Christmas movie. Review: 'Uncle Frank' a powerful, moving drama that encapsulates the gay experience in America11/23/2020 Paul Bettany has never been better than he is in the gripping drama, "Uncle Frank."
The actor has been around for decades now, known to most modern movie-goers as Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a character actor, he's been a solid presence in nearly everything he's ever been in. But in some ways, over 30 years in the business, Bettany seems to arrive as an actor in "Uncle Frank," giving a tender yet nuanced performance that might just land him some serious award consideration for the first time in his lengthy career. It would be well-deserved. Most sports dramas follow the same clichéd patterns, with rousing action sequences interspersed with bits of drama, featuring a man with the heart of a champion for us to root for. "Embattled" can't even balance the genre clichés properly. The problems start with the script, but they expand to cover the choppy, ineffective MMA fight sequences and the either overcooked or under-served characters at its center.
The life and career of John Belushi is given the oral history treatment, in the new Showtime documentary simply titled, "Belushi." There is some great archival footage and some behind-the-scenes stories included, even if the film falls short in really letting us understand what made him tick.
