He is happily married with children, that is, until his wife (Julianne Moore) suddenly asks for a divorce...she's bored and unhappy with him. Cal's teenage babysitter is in love with him, and his son is in love with the babysitter. Cal goes to a bar to drink away his problems when he's noticed by the sexy womanizer, Jacob (Ryan Gosling), and taken under his wing to learn how to pick up women. Hannah (Emily Stone) is a young girl waiting for her boyfriend to propose, not because she really loves him, but because it would kind of be nice if someone liked her like that.

Opens locally Friday, July 29th, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour, 49 minutes, Rated PG Starring: Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara Voices: Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf), Alan Cumming (Gutsy), Katy Perry (Smurfette), Fred Armisan (Brainy), George Lopez (Grouchy), Anton Yelchin (Clumsy) Directed by Raja Gosnell (Home Alone 3, Scooby-Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) The question is not "was the new 'Smurfs' movie any good?" The bigger question is, "why does someone read a critical review of a movie like 'The Smurfs?'" Only you can answer that, my friend. But for friends and family, and others who still may be reading, and for those who really are on the fence ("should we go see "The Smurfs" tonight? Hmm...."), I will do my due diligence and report my findings. I'm happy to say that it is not nearly as bad as I had thought. I just can't get over the simple plot device used in countless movies and used again here...our Smurfs find themselves lost in New York. Rating: 3 out of 5 starsGenre: Western, Sci-Fi
Opens locally Friday, July 29th, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour, 58 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach Directed by Jon Favreau (Elf, Iron Man, Iron Man 2) You have to give credit to those behind the new film "Cowboys & Aliens," for their attempt at originality. It's been quite a while since we've seen a really good Western, and rarely (if ever) have we seen the genre cross streams with futuristic science fiction quite like this. "Cowboys & Aliens" is a mash-up of the two genres, doing justice to both of them without ever becoming campy. Unfortunately, the end result feels exactly that: All mashed up, proving that if you combine a B-Movie Western with a B-Movie Sci-Fi flick, the result doesn't produce an A-caliber film. Opens locally Friday, July 22nd, 2011 Run Time: 2 hours, 4 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones Directed by Joe Johnston (Jumanji, The Wolfman, Jurassic Park 3) Evil villain threatens to take over the world with super-weapon. Wholesome hero tries (and succeeds) in stopping him from doing so. The End. If you feel like you haven't seen this plot before, by all means, go see "Captain America." But if you are like me and tire from re-hashed "same-old, same-old" crap, then you may want to think twice...yes, my fellow Americans, Captain America is not even quite mindless summer fun, and is by far the weakest addition of the films that are leading into 2012's cross-over blockbuster-to-be, "The Avengers." Opens locally Friday, July 22nd, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour, 28 minutes, Rated R Directed by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) "Tabloid" is a strangely entrancing documentary that is narrowed in on one particular headline from the late 1970's. As the title of the film states, this is a story bizarre enough to categorize itself as not just "news," but the film is not an all-encompassing look at the tabloid industry as a whole. If anything, it is a re-telling of a stranger than fiction tale that mirrors modern-day media and displays how sometimes the truth of the story isn't the most important part. Opens locally Friday, July 15th, 2011 Run Time: 2 hours, 11 minutes, Rated PG-13 Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes Directed by David Yates (director of the previous 3 Harry Potter films) As I write this review, it is just past midnight, where surely millions of fans currently sit in drooling anticipation at late-night screenings of this...the last chapter in the Harry Potter film saga. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," as I'm sure you know, is the 8th and final film adaptation of the famously popular book series be reknowned author, J.K. Rowling. But if I had to guess, I'd say you are all set and ready to dive right in to "Deathly Hallows Part 2," one of most highly anticipated movie of 2011, or any year for that matter. Opens locally Friday, July 8th, 2011 Run Time: 1 hour, 33 minutes (Rated R) Starring: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx Directed by Seth Gordon (The King of Kong, Four Christmases) On paper, I would imagine that "Horrible Bosses" looked like a comedy masterpiece...a relatable subject (who doesn't hate their boss, or has at one point in their careers?) led by a talented cast of well-known faces. And although it falls short of a future "comedy classic," it is a cheese-tastic, rip-roaring raunch of a good time. |
