Look, this movie is not for everyone. But welcome to the new sub-genre of horror, the Ari Aster film.

New movies this week: 'It,' 'Home Again,' 'Viceroy's House' and 'The Oath' in theaters Sept 89/8/2017 2017 has turned out to be one of the worst years in history at the box office, and the last two weekends in particular have ranked among the worst in 16 years. A Stephen King classic and a romantic comedy hope to turn things around and get the box office back on track.

Run Time: 1 hour 21 minutes, Rated R Starring: Heather Sossaman, Will Peltz, Courtney Halverson, Shelley Hennig, Moses Jacob Storm, Renee Olstead, Jacob Wysocki Directed by Levan Gabriadze (Lucky Trouble) The entire movie Unfriended (opening today) takes place on a laptop. Yes, the whole thing. As if we don't spend enough time in front of our computer screens, Unfriended invites us out to a theater to stare blankly at a computer screen for a laborious 82 minutes, which most of the time would be considered a short run time for a feature, but here is made to feel like an eternity. Beyond this gimmicky premise, Unfriended is a thin, pathetic attempt at horror, as seen through the eyes of the Snapchat and Instagram generation. Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGenre: Horror
Run Time: 1 hour 40 minutes, Rated R Starring: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe Written & Directed by David Robert Mitchell (The Myth of the American Sleepover) 2011's The Myth of the American Sleepover is the best movie you've probably never seen. That film, the feature-length debut for Michigan-native writer/director, David Robert Mitchell, was as independent as a movie can get, shot on a shoe-string budget and featuring a cast of unknown, inexperienced actors. Mitchell's minimalist approach helped create what should have been a pretty familiar "coming-of-age" story, and instead he birthed a genre re-defining modern classic. Mitchell's second writing and directorial effort comes out today, the low-budget horror film, It Follows (opening locally at Cinema Detroit and at the Main Art Theater), and once again he re-defines a genre...or perhaps more accurately, re-discovers one. Rating: 3 out of 5 starsGenre: Comedy, Horror
Run Time: 1 hour 26 minutes, Not Rated Starring: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Bugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stuart Rutherford, Ben Fransham, Rhys Darby Co-Written & Co-Directed by Jemaine Clement (directorial debut) and Taika Waititi (Boy, Eagle vs. Shark) In the vein (pun intended) of brilliant mock-umentary comedies like This is Spinal Tap!, Best in Show and Fear of a Black Hat, comes What We Do in the Shadows (opening today in limited release). The premise is that a group of brave filmmakers - given crosses for protection of course - have been given exclusive and rare access into a flat occupied by a "family" of vampires. Hilarity then ensues. Rating: 3 out of 5 starsGenre: Drama, Horror, Thriller
Run Time: 2 hours, Not Rated Starring: Alexia Rasmussen, Alexa Havins, Kristina Klebe, Joe Swanberg Written by Kevin Donner, Zack Parker Directed by Zack Parker (Scalene, Quench, Inexchange) Proxy (opening today) begins with a horrifying opening sequence that challenges you to keep watching. A young mother with presumably no family or close friends, Esther (Alexia Rasmussen) is nearly through her nine-months of pregnancy when on the way home from her doctor, she is knocked over the head by a masked assailant. Unconscious, the attacker continually beats her pregnant belly with a brick before escaping the scene. |
