The 93rd Annual Academy Awards - The Oscars - will air live on Sunday, April 25th, 2021, at 8pm EDT on ABC (there are even more ways to watch...see the bottom of this article). They will surely be an awards show like none other, following a year like none other, where a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic forced this year's best films mostly out of theaters and into our living rooms (and/or mobile devices).
With no massive blockbusters to rally around, many are predicting that this year's Oscar celebration will flop - from a viewership standpoint - just as other early-season award shows have (both Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards telecasts fell dramatically in the ratings as compared to last year's pre-pandemic broadcasts). But that doesn't mean that there haven't been some amazing films in 2020...there have been. For most movie-goers, it's been more challenging than ever to keep track of where and how to find these movies. But I'm here to help. Read on for a quick and handy guide as to where to watch this year's batch of Oscar-nominated films and performances, and prepare yourself for this year's Oscar telecast...it may not be what we're used to, but you'll be happy to have tracked down some of these amazing movies.

Many are describing "Voyagers" as "Lord of the Flies" in space, because that's the quickest and most effective way to describe what it's all about. But despite the talented young cast and a sleek, futuristic look, "Voyagers" drifts a little too far away from relevancy.
Melissa McCarthy is one funny lady, and we know that she must be fiercely loyal too. Because once again she puts her career on the line to try to make the most out of her husband's, Ben Falcone's, flimsy comedy, "Thunder Force."
Bottom line: It's terrible. But so were Falcone's last few films - "Superintelligence," "Life of the Party," "The Boss" and "Tammy," - films that were all directed by Falcone and with the exception of "Superintelligence," written by him as well. And they all share another commonality in that each film stars his wife, Melissa McCarthy, who is a tremendously funny and gifted actress whenever she is not trying to make the most of a Ben Falcone movie. The most over-looked and under-appreciated portion of every Academy Awards ceremony are the Oscar-nominated Short Films, awarded in three distinct categories: Animated, Live-Action and Documentary. In recent years, these Oscar-nominated Short Films have been put together as a showcase, and shown in select movie theaters across the country.
Believe me: These films are worth seeing and in fact I'd say that they are "must-see" for any fan of the Oscars or movies in general. They are often provocative, heart-warming, and sometimes yes, heart-wrenching. On occasion, they can be downright hilarious. Check your local listings (in Michigan, The Maple Theater will begin playing these Short Films beginning Friday, April 2nd) to see when/if this program will be playing near you, and if you haven't been tempted to go back out to a theater just yet, this year's batch of Oscar-nominated Short Films are definitely worthy of validating your first trip back. |
